Colorado, Denver pets among fattest in nation

Colorado is said to have the fittest residents in the US, but it has a secret underbelly. And it is fat and furry.

Denver ranks among the top five cities for most overweight pets, along with Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Seattle and Boston, according to the State of Pet Health 2012 Report.

In Denver which comes in fourth-fattest 24 percent of dogs and 26 percent of cats were overweight or obese in 2011.

Just under 20 percent of Colorado humans were reportedly overweight last year, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Yet Colorado ties for seventh among states with the highest proportion of clinically fat dogs. Colorados fat cats...

Spring means sports end for senior athletes (and parents too)

Spring means sports end for senior athletes (and parents too)

May 1, 2012 – By Craig Blumenshine, Staff Writer

You have probably heard the advice that some coaches give their teams during competition.

Play this game like its your last game ever, or Leave it all on the field, echoes in minds of players from various moments of their athletic careers.

And that is good advice for mentors to give kids, cheering them on to work hard and give good performances for their teams.

The coaches are trying hard to give the athletes the discipline they need to succeed on the field and move on to new experiences later in life.

RHS soccer coach Erly Cornejo and assistant...

Gautier Marine still in the game

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — Anthony McDaniel is moving on.

Nothing seems to hold him back. Why should it? he says.

Wounded by a mine in Afghanistan less than two years ago, he lost both legs and his left hand.

What he has found is a determination to compete again.

The 23-year-old graduated from Gautier High School with a college basketball scholarship before joining the Marines.

On Thursday, he joined the Marine Corps wheelchair basketball team at the Wounded Warriors Games in Colorado Springs.

Its a six-day sports competition for soldiers and veterans put on by the US Olympic Committee. First lady Michelle Obama opened the ceremonies Tuesday.

Amused at the Park? Theme and amusement parks are fun, until someone gets hurt

We all love amusement parks. The thrill of the roller coaster, the refreshment of the water slides, and winning the big stuffed animals are all part of a wonderful family experience. Now that Spring is upon us, many of us will venture out into these parks to enjoy ourselves. As much fun as there is to be had, the day can be very dangerous if care is not taken.

Millions of people visit amusement parks each year without incident, however each year thousands are injured during such visits. Tragically, some visitors never leave an amusement or water parks alive.

Injuries occur when you do not follow safety rules, and also when the rides or facilities themselves are defective or partially...

Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch dies

Members of the action sports community mourned the death of Beastie Boys founding member Adam MCA Yauch on Friday. Yauch died early Friday at the age of 47 following a three-year battle with cancer, according to the Associated Press. He had been diagnosed with a tumor in his salivary gland in 2009.

Goodbye MCA, we will dearly miss your old school flow, tweeted Tony Hawk, who famously skated to The Beastie Boys in the Birdhouse Skateboards video The End.

Rest in peace to one of the best — MCA. You inspired me and millions of others, said BMXer and action sports personality Rick Thorne on Friday morning.

Pets could chew a hole in your wallet

Pets have a special place in many peoples hearts. They offer companionship, amusement and even health benefits, if studies were true. But on top of the purring and snuggling, these furry creatures can also leave a huge hole in your wallet.

Michelle later realised that pet ownership involves financial sacrifices. The cat cost her Dh2,000 to purchase and in the first month alone, she spent another Dh850 on fresh towels, toys, treats, food and other living essentials, to ensure Delilah is well taken care of. She also had to shell out Dh300 during an initial trip to the veterinary clinic for de-worming.

What’s new at zoo? Plenty, they say

The Columbian Park Zoo opened last weekend, but visitors can look forward to the rollout of a refurbished amusement ride center and the addition of several new animals as the summer unfolds.

We want to focus on engagement with the public, Claudine Laufman, director of the zoo, said.

Despite chilly, blustery weather, Laufman said visitors were not deterred on the opening weekend.

The Columbian Park Zoo, on the east side of Columbian Park off Wallace Avenue, has more than 190 animals representing 90 species. It offers educational events and other services. Admission is free.

This will be the first year the zoo will operate an amusement ride service. The kiddie rides...
